A corporate media group has trade-marked the phrase “Radical Media” and is trying to ban Peace news, Red Pepper and others from using it in the title of a conference…

Following a recent Diary item in the Guardian, indymedia is today reporting on the story that a corporate media group has forced us to change the name of our conference. Readers are invited to attend a demonstration outside @Radical Media’s London office, Tuesday, 3rd May 2011, 5pm, London W1T 7AA.

We make radical media, You make adverts”

What is “radical media” and should there be restrictions on who is allowed to use that term? It seems fantastical that those actively involved in radical media, from UK indymedia to North African revolutionaries might be prevented from using an adjective to describe what they do, but this is exactly what a global media group is trying to do.

Tickets for the RMC are now available!

There’s a sliding scale (£15 – £75) depending on income. Those on no wages and low wages should purchase at the lower end of the scale. If you are on a modest or good wage, please spend more on your ticket. The conference is costing quite a bit to put on and our budget is very tight!

PLEASE NOTE that we will not actually be sending our tickets. We will have a list on the door so do bring along your email confirmation that you have paid.

We are currently drafting the programme for the Conference, which will comprise roughly fifty small (<30 people) workshops, and eight larger (100+) sessions, and we would very much appreciate any ideas and suggestions that you might have.

Specifically, for each of the five topics below we would like to know: (a) what sessions you would like to see take place during the RMC; and (b) the names and contact details of people or organisations you think might be able to help facilitate these sessions:

(1) Inspiring radical media projects or initiatives
(2) Radical critiques of the mainstream media
(3) Training and skillsharing
(4) Dialogue with the mainstream media
(5) Radical media & the digital revolution

Please send your ideas and suggestions to us at rebelliousmediaconference [at] riseup [dot] net, or phone us on 0780 114 0192 (Emma) or 0845 458 2564 (Gabriel). If you would like to submit a detailed idea for a session then please use the “RMC Workshop Proposal Form” here. The latter can be e-mailed to us at rebelliousmediaconference [at] riseup [dot] net or posted to Rebellious Media Conference, c/o Peace News, 5 Caledonian Rd, London N1 9DX.
